Congrats to Italy

World Cup 2006

Not that I'm a huge football/soccer fan, but I did watch the end of the World Cup final between Italy and France. I tuned in just in time to see France's star player Zinedine Zidane make a bizarre and vicious penalty, headbutting Italy's Marco Materazzi in the chest and sending him to the ground. Zidane was red carded and thrown out of the game, leaving France crestfallen and short-handed. With the air taken out of their sails, France eventually succombed to Italy in the penalty kick round (5-3). More importantly, any good will towards France was disintegrated by captain Zidane's unsportsmanlike act. I was glad to see Italy win. It is their fourth World Cup. Only Brazil has won more (with five). Congrats to Italy!
