Launch of Mosaic Church (Charlotte)

Mosaic CharlotteKen Garfield, ravenous religion reporter for the Charlotte Observer, has a story today on a new church plant in north Charlotte called Mosaic Church. The story is accompanied by a photo slideshow with music from Mosaic's first service, just one week ago (Jan. 22), at the AMC Theater in the huge new Northlake Mall.

This Mosaic Church is a "sister church" of Seacoast Church in Charleston, SC, a member of the Association of Related Churches (ARC), and "loosely affiliated" with Erwin McManus' Mosaic Church in L.A.

Mosaic Charlotte is being started by Pastor Naeem Fazal, a Pakistani who was raised Muslim in Kuwait. Naeem's bio says he became a Christian after having "a supernatural encounter with Christ." Naeem was previously the Young Adults Pastor at Seacoast's Long Point campus in Mount Pleasant, SC. Naeem's wife, Ashley, has a blog called "Church Planting Wife."

It's interesting to note that, although the ARC is based in Baton Rouge, LA, many of its key leaders are from Seacoast Church. Also, the ARC lists two other recent Charlotte church plants on its list of "related churches"—The Life Church at Charlotte (in south Charlotte) and Networks Church (currently meeting in north Charlotte homes with a monthly "Celebration" servive/gathering).

All of which leads me to wonder: How many churches can one metropolitan area support? I know, I know, I'm just another Emergent guy asking questions without any answers (wink, wink). So here's what I do know: I'd love to connect with these folks and invite them to the Emerging Church Discussion Group and perhaps they'd be interested in the "Conversation" being organized by John O'Keefe this May in Hickory, NC, as well.

If my childhood home of Minnesota is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," then Charlotte has got to be called the "Land of 10,000 Churches." Well, God certainly loves The Church, and I'm sure He's got plenty of love in His heart for all of our churches, as well. God bless 'em.
