Emmaus Way in Durham
Tim Conder has resurrected his blog (PTL!), and has revealed some details of the new "missional community/church plant" (of Chapel Hill Bible Church) that's now being called "Emmaus Way." He outlines five aspects of hospitality that "have become passions and goals" for their community.
I think the name "Emmaus Way" is a beautiful irony, really. Here's why: Some critics of the emerging church are seriously looking at the movement as part of the "apostasy" that the Bible prophesies will arise in the "last days." That "apostasy" is characterized (in Matthew 24) with these words: "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold." But the story of "Emmaus Way" (in Luke 24) reminds us of the words of Jesus' disciples who, reflecting upon what the Christ had taught them during their conversation along the road to Emmaus, said: "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
I'll be watching the growth of Emmaus Way in Durham with great interest, and my prayers are certainly with them as they "seek to be a community that continues to learn from the historical church while also acting as a scout for the church as [it] begins to collide with the emerging culture."
