I was challenged on this recently by reading Todd Hunter’s posts on Ray Kurtweil’s book The Age of Spiritual Machines. Kurtweil writes, “... the purposeful destruction of information is the essence of intelligent work.” Hunter observes:

Isn’t information the god of the age? Wouldn’t we want to do anything to protect it and have more of it—piles and piles of it like money?

But, on second thought, like any good subversive thought (similar to the way Jesus’ parables functioned), it makes total sense. I don’t know about you all, but I need nothing more in my life than “focus.” This means I have to set aside—and destroy—lots of “information” coming my way in order to do good, intelligent work.

So if you see me posting less over the coming weeks, it’s because I’m destroying more information than I’m passing along. And hopefully I’ll be doing more intelligent work as a result. Let me know if you give a damn either way. Thanks!
