What is Emergent Doing?!

Jason Clark from Emergent UK gives us the skinny. Here are the highlights, as I see them:

  • "We have been told that a few high-powered conservative evangelical voices have targeted us for critique. We have expected this for some time, and have so far been impressed by how generous and restrained critique has been. That restraint may end soon. When it does, we need to be prepared to keep a sweet spirit about critiques, and not become distracted by them." This is referring, I assume, to the forthcoming D.A. Carson book.
  • "We have resisted 'institutionalization' because it hinders creativity, yet a lack of adequate structure erodes margin and has the same effect. So we need to develop adequate structure, knowing (as A. W. Tozer wisely said) that structure is 'necessary and dangerous.'" It'll be interesting to see how Emergent moves forward to add structure, but remain organic.
The key fact to keep in mind that Emergent is a "network of networks," and is not synonymous with the "emerging church" as a whole (which is, as only God knows, always much larger and more nebulous). But Emergent is playing a significant role in where the Church is going, so it's wise to keep an eye on what they're doing.

UPDATE 9/20: DJ Chuang has some good thoughts posted in response to Jason Clark's update on Emergent. He also points to some other blog posts about the emerging church and racism, which is an interesting meme to follow.
