The Power of Words Like "Genocide"

Image: Copyright 2004 SamaritansPurse.orgAfter performing linguistic backflips for months, Colin Powell was finally able to call the "crisis" in Sudan a "genocide" today. This acknowledgment will require the U.S. to take more action in Sudan—and hopefully a "coalition of the willing" will also join us. (Why haven't any other countries stepped up on this yet?!)

In related news: The Sudanese government realizes what Powell's statement today really means, and they've gone on the defensive, claiming that genocide claims are simply "a Bush bid for votes." Seriously. I can't even describe how ridiculous that is.

I just hope we're not so entrenched in Iraq and Afghanistan that we cannot take on problems in places like Sudan, or wherever a need may arise for U.S. military intervention. Not that I believe America's military might is the answer to everything. I'm not even certain it was the answer for Iraq, but what's done is done.

And genocide is genocide. It is evil, and it is wrong. And we know that. The world knows that. And we can't sit by and let murderers and terrorists have their way with millions of helpless souls. That is what's called "unconscionable."

[Thanks to Steven for the update, and for this shocking news item!]

Hey Steve. I'm all registered and ready to comment. I'm also registered and ready to vote. I am so registered.

I'm glad you're writing about the Sudan. This tragedy has been going on far longer than just this year. There has been a systematic slaughter of Christians (and any other non-muslim peoples) going on there for almost a decade now. It's tragic. I think the U.S. and the rest of the West are not free from guilt in this, either. We have allowed it to go on for this long. It's really an awful situation.

Maybe now there will be enough pressure on our leaders to do something about this genocide.
