New Way to Be Charlie
There's a new article on passageway.org that I think people will be interested in. It's an interview with Charlie Peacock written by my pal Kevin D. Hendricks. I must say it is one of my favorite articles from Kevin so far, but then again the subject matter is pretty good.
Charlie Peacock is coming on strong as a new voice for the so-called "emerging church movement," speaking at both Emergent Conventions this year, a new book entitled New Way to Be Human, and offering cogent advice to postmodern pilgrims, such as:
Find a tribe of people who will let you talk about [your faith] in an honest way. The only way you'll know if it's true or not is to step into the story. Just like you would step into a pair of overalls or put on a jacket, you have to do that and wear it for a while and walk with other believers. Sometimes people don't recognize that when Jesus called his first disciples, they weren't Christians. He just called them and they followed Him and walked with Him. ... That's the way you find out whether it's real or not.
I like how he put this because it's a great way to articulate one of the things that makes an "emerging church" distinctive — the openness and acceptance of normal people wherever they are at on the spiritual spectrum. Everyone is welcome to follow Christ and journey with others in community, and along the way we become His disciples. At least, that's the way it should be.

Speaking of Al Qaeda, an authority recently rebuked a reporter by saying, "You like to give this group a name and shape, but you can't. It doesn't have one. It's a movement." That's what followers of Jesus are. I'm not an "emergent," in such terms. In fact, I probably stand some distance away. I an independent fundamentalist seperatist Baptist pastor, with a broken heart for the souls of all men and a great love for God, who happens to share your last name and birth year.

Charlie Peacock is the artist that convinced me that it was illellectually okay to be a Christian.
