Motley (And Brilliant) Fools

Simon Jenkins and Steve GoddardThe National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) annual convention got officially underway today in Charlotte with several "boot camps" on areas such as radio, TV and film, leadership, and the Internet.

I attended the Internet Boot Camp led by members of the Internet Evangelism Coalition on the topic of (you guessed it) Internet evangelism. While it's always nice to hear from the "usual suspects" behind the IEC, the real treat of the day was hearing from Simon Jenkins and Steve Goddard the motley (and brilliant) fools behind the British humor site ShipOfFools.com.

Their presentation was at once entertaining and challenging, a little irreverent, and all around great fun. They discussed the history of their site, some Web principles that they try to follow (and how those things manifest themselves on Ship of Fools), and the bleeding-edge (first of its kind) Internet reality game show they created last year called The Ark.

My brethren from the other side of the pond -- with their "fiercely independent" spirit and "outside the box" thinking -- stood in stark contrast to the standard Internet ministry fare offered by the other presenters. (The other guys were literally touting their pre-packaged Internet ministry "products" and "solutions." Not that there's anything wrong with that ...)

Steve and Simon even had the audacity (or stupidity, some might argue) to proudly declare at a seminar on evangelism that they explicitly set out not to do evangelism. But, nevertheless, their site has done just that for many spiritually seeking and cynical people in the UK and around the world.

Check out the Ship of Fools U.S. Tour Dates to see if Steve and Simon are coming to a town near you.
